Google Announces Chrome Operating System
Google today announced its Chrome operating system, an extension of the company's Chrome Internet browser that launched just under a year ago. The Chrome OS will be open source and targeted at netbooks, and will become available in the second half of 2010. It will run on x86 and ARM chips.
Google says its intention is to create a lightweight operating system that emphasizes speed, security, and simplicity. It will be designed "to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds."
The Google Chrome OS is not the same as Google's Android operating system; it is an entirely separate project.
