AMD 4800 series mobile GPUs on the way

AMD's next-generation ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4800 series graphics cards have been approved by the PCI SIG. The GPUs are coded M96 and M98-L. They will be the notebook equivalents of the RV770-based desktop graphics cards.

There is no word on a release date for the GPUs, but considering that the Mobility Radeon HD 3800 series was just released, it will probably be in Q4'08 at the earliest.

Dell offering 128GB SSD in notebooks

Dell will be offering a 128GB SSD option in its Latitude, XPS, Alienware, and Precision notebook lines starting Tuesday, July 15. The 128GB SSD will cost $600, the same price Dell was charging for 32GB SSDs last year.

Dell is the second company to ship a notebook with a 128GB SSD.

Dell Latitude XT getting Multi-touch support

Dell will be adding multi-touch support to its Latitude XT tablet PC tomorrow, July 15, according to Electronista. The multi-touch support will be available in a software patch from the company's website. Examples of uses for mutli-touch include zooming in and out on web pages using a pinch motion with two fingers, Windows' built-in photo viewer, two-finger scrolling, Google Earth, and Microsoft Office.

One of our forum members has spotted a Toshiba Qosmio X305 gaming laptop at their local Best Buy. The X305 on display carries a $1,549 price tag and includes the following specifications:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 processor
  • 17-inch WXGA+ TruBrite HD Display
  • Nvidia GeForce 9700M-GTS 512MB graphics card
  • 200GB  7200RPM hard drive
  • 4GB DDR3 system memory @ 1066MHz

ASUS blames Intel for Eee PC holdups

ASUS is blaming Intel for the lack of the Atom-based Eee PC on shelves of UK computer sellers. Windows XP models are available, but Linux ones are not. Suppliers say the Linux-based model will be available in late July.

All manufacturers are experiencing delays because Intel is having trouble supplying the Atom processors. ASUS says the first shipment of Eee PCs to the UK has been sold out. Intel needs to increase Atom processor shipments before supplies of Atom-based computerss increase.
