IDC reported this week some preliminary numbers for the volume level of PC shipments by brand throughout the world for Q3 2007. Shipments were up 15.5% over Q3 2006. HP remains number one in the world for PC shipments, while Dell is number one in the U.S. Notebook shipments of course continue to outpace the growth of desktops.
U.S. PC sales results for Q3 2007
In the U.S Dell was the number one in terms of total volume of PCs shipped (a PC is defined as a desktop PC, notebook, or x86 server -- handheld computers are not included). HP remains number two in the U.S. and had a solid growth of 17% volume shipped in the U.S. over Q3 2006. Apple has now propelled to #3 in the U.S. for volume of computers shipped.

Although Acer is not currently in the top 5 for U.S. share of PC sales, with their acquisition of Gateway that will obviously change in the future.
Worldwide PC sales results for Q3 2007
Japan had flat growth of PC shipments over Q3 2006. Interestingly NEC is the number one PC vendor in that country, though it's hard to find an NEC notebook anywhere outside of Japan.
Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) saw large growth in the number of notebooks shipped for Q3 2007. Acer has its core market in this region and that company continued to strengthen its position by increasing sales 60% in the EMEA over Q3 2006.
Asia (not including Japan) is the realm of Lenovo in terms of PC sales. Lenovo was the clear #1 in this region, but HP and Acer are catching up on the Chinese based company. Lenovo was able to grow sales 23% worldwide over Q3 2006.

According to IDC, shipments of PCs should continue to have strong growth going into the end of the year. The only fly in the ointment is component shortages for things like batteries and screens that could force prices higher, but this will likely affect small PC vendors more than the larger companies.
